There are 3 types of entry to Machu Picchu: one is Machu Picchu only, another is Machu Picchu plus Huayna Picchu, and the last is Machu Picchu plus Montaña.

Below, I’ll show you some of the differences between these types of tickets along with some helpful images.

With the MACHU PICCHU ONLY ticket, you can visit the citadel of Machu Picchu and explore the entire city. You will also have the option to take the famous POSTCARD photo, the photo that everyone takes. If you want to visit Machu Picchu without climbing any mountains, this is the right ticket for you. The mountain in the background is Montaña Huayna Picchu, and behind the person in this picture would be Montaña Machu Picchu. THERE ARE ONLY TWO SHIFTS TO ENTER MACHU PICCHU: 1st shift with entrance from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2nd shift with entrance from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

If in addition to visiting the city of Machu Picchu you wish you climb Huayna Picchu mountain, you will want to buy the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ticket. From this mountain, you can take pictures like the one above and see the city of Machu Picchu from the peak. The ascent time under normal conditions is 1 hour, and 45 minutes to come back down. It all depends on your physical fitness and weather conditions. If you want this entry ticket, you need to buy it many months in advance because there are only 400 tickets per day divided into two groups: 1G, entering from 7:00-8:00 a.m., and 2G which enters from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Machu Picchu city is included no matter what—you can’t buy Huayna Picchu by itself.

Machu Picchu + Montaña is another type of ticket that allows you to visit the Machu Picchu citadel and also climb this mountain, Montaña Machu Picchu. To get to this point, you need to walk about 2 hours, and once you reach the peak, you can see a miniature Huayna Picchu mountain in the background (covered with clouds in this picture) as well as the city of Machu Picchu. Many tourists who come to Machu Picchu for a second time tell us that the trek and view from Montaña Machu Picchu are much better. To climb this mountain, you need to buy a ticket with Machu Picchu city—you can’t buy entry to Machu Picchu Mountain by itself. And, like with Huayna Picchu Mountain, tickets are limited to 800 per day, where 400 enter in one group (1G) from 7:00-8:00 a.m. and the rest in another group (2G) from 9:00-10:00 a.m.
